Sympathy Wording
Like any type of writing, breaking the task down into steps can make it easier to understand and to do. For example, you should first begin with a warm salutation that is appropriate for how well you know the deceased and/or the family. For example, if you knew them well, you would use first names. If you had a more distant relationship then it would be appropriate to use titles of respect, such as Mr. or Mrs. Remember if you are sending the sympathy cards to a woman and you do not know her marital status, you should always use Ms. instead.
In the body of the message, you want to show that you share their grief over the loss of this person. Never try to share your own personal experiences of loss or act like you are feeling an equal amount of grief in your condolence cards. Even though you may feel this information would be helpful to them at this time, most people who have lost a loved one would find these words upsetting and not soothing. Instead, consider sharing your own fond memory of the person if possible. If you did not know the person well, you might want to say something like "Going through this type of loss must be very difficult for your family. I am so sorry for your loss. Your family will be in my heart and my prayers."
